The New Trend in Toilet Hygiëne

Using water to wash your derrière after using the toilet is not a new concept.  The bidet was first developed in France in the 1700’s.  The word bidet means “a small horse” in (middle) French.  The name bidet was given to this toilet fixture because it required the user to straddle the bowl during use, as you would a horse.  The bidet concept was modernized by the Japanese who adopted the American style sit-down toilet seat and combined it with the bidet to develop the Toto Washlet toilet seat.  The washlets have many amazing features intended to render toilet paper obsolete.  The basic idea is to clean the posterior area with warm water and blow dry with air.  It has been so successful in Japan that over 72% of households are using one.

The Asian washlet concept has emerged in western european markets with the development of Shower-Toilets.  Some of these toilets are built on the Japanese Toto Washlet technology.  The shower toilets bring the concept of the bidet back into the bathroom without compromising space and with all the added bells and whistles that modern technology has to offer.  And that is not an understatement!  The new shower-toilets have it all in the name of hygiene and luxury.  In addition, consumers also benefit from improved water economy and flush efficiency.  The new shower-toilets have been re-designed to blend into the modern bathroom without looking like a captains chair with ground effects!  Several manufacturers also offer a revolutionary porcelain coating that prevents waste particles from adhering to the porcelain bowl. This means that fewer waste particles are left behind after the toilet bowl is flushed, improving the hygiene of the toilet bowl as well as making it much easier to clean.

Of course the shower toilet still operates like a traditional toilet and can be flushed like a regular toilet.  Less expensive models may feature water spray only with the control buttons on the side of the bowl.  More expensive models come with a remote control, an assortment of spray settings, air dryer settings, seat heating functions, sensory toilet seat open and closing option and other features.  The new shower-toilets come in a vairety of specifications and offer options for a range of budgets.  Like it or love it, the shower-Toilet trend looks like it is here to stay.
